"Playing Around" with Improvisation

Building Skills and Develping a Team

Who We Are:

The senior Arts Education/Drama teachers in the Living Sky School Division held a meeting to discuss their experiences, interests and needs. It was determined that they would like to work on Improvisation as a focus for the 2007/08 year.

This site will be used to share our experiences with the introductory workshop and our Playing Around evenings and future performances. The site will also have resources and links we find useful to share. Teachers are invited to post their photos and stories and ideas and requests on this wiki. If you would like the password please contact Sherron Burns (937-7914) or email her.

Activities

Activities

  1. Introductory Workshop, Sept 10 '07 at NBCHS with Jaden Pfeifer (Canadian Improv Games) and Daniel and Rob

about 100 people in attendance (students and teachers from Unity, Wilkie, Spiritwood, Medstead and NBCHS)

  2. Skill building with students in your school - teachers were given copies of two Canadian Improv Games training DVD's. There is a downloadable handbook as well. Other sites will be listed below. The Living Sky Resource library has a number of good books which may be borrowed. Teachers are invited to call on Sherron Burns if they would like further workshops on improv skills with their students. She is very willing to work with your class on more games and exercises as a follow up.
  3. Identify team members for an Improv club - as you work with students their interests and skills will become more apparent. A team is usually made up of 8 to 10 students, and you may have more than one team. The team needs to become cohesive and learn to work as a group. No one member of the group is more important than another. Their committment to the team will build over time as they practice different games and exercises.
  4. Participate in a "Playing Around" evening, one or two schools to host events, all are invited to participate

The first organized evening will be with no outside audience and no pressure. It will be focussed on building confidence and practicing our skills.

  5. Possible public performances to be discussed.  Ideas for fundraising activities discussed as well.
