"Spirit of the Story" : Sharing the work from our Artist in the Classroom project

Presented with help from S'Cool, making DREAMS come true.

Teachers and students had a great time with the artists visiting their schools. Teachers were amazed at the activities and were given many ideas to help them as they build their program. We were playing, exploring and creating all together and it was fabulous.

Students were heard to say,

"Do we have to go for recess?"

"This is my best day ever!"

"I'm not even going to plan it, I'm just going to do it. This is great!"

Teachers were heard to say,

"Do we actually paid to do this today? It's so much fun!"

"We don't want a break, let's keep going."

"I have learned so much over the last two days. It was really helpful to have the time with the artists."

Artists were heard to say,

"I haven't laughed so much in a long while."

"What a terrific opportunity it was to work so closely with other artists as well."

     "When's the 2nd Annual?"

Lawrence School, grade 7

Michele Sereda "Creating Characters"

Warm Up:

Body realease work, alignment, yoga, and Qui Gong to get them focused and working as a team.

Ball Game:

Practice constantly sensing and receiving while remaining calm and keeping focused. Analagy to drama - dropping the ball is like forgetting your lines.

Jo Ha Kry:

Exercise in sensing the natural rhythm which creates unity.

Creating a Character:

Using a picture for a source of inspiration.

Create a character bio:

  • education
  • desires
  • relationship
  • era
  • occupation
  • location
  • name
Each wrote a 50 word monologue (first person voice)

Connecting Character to Physicality

Choose a physical centre (location) to represent how the character would move. Practice moving in different ways to show where the weight is located.

Working in Pairs

Share your monologue, while in character, to your partner. Use conversational form.

Let your physicality in your body match your voice.

The Performance

Pairs performed their conversations for the group.

Michele Sereda

Michele was a very energetic and enthusiatic presenter. She would say, "You can't think too much. Go with your instinct. Your voice is connected to your body."

The students and teachers learned a lot and gained insight into the world of drama, and how to create characters.

Battleford Central - Aileen Hayden

"Creative Dance"

Hartley Clark - Gabriel Yahyahkeekoot and Shane Bellegarde

"Guerilla Film Making"

 Grade 5/6

I would really like to thank Sherron and the ArtsEd group for bringing Gabriel Yahyahkeekoot and Shane Bellegarde to Hartley Clark. Our students had a blast and were so excited by the time we held our mini-film festival at the end of the day that it was hard to keep the noise level down low enough to hear the films. Gabriel and Shane were excellent and we'd love to have them come back again (hint, hint)! We kind of threw the whole school into chaos for part of the morning as the 4 groups of students ran around the school setting up their scenes, scoping out shooting locations and rehearsing their shots - true to the spirit of guerilla film-making. It was a little less chaotic in the afternoon even though refrains of "Quiet on the set!", "Action!" and "Cut!" echoed down the hallways. We may have produced a few Fellinis this afternoon. I do know for sure that Gabriel and Shane will be a hard act to follow and they have set us up well to start doing some editing with iMovie. Thank you again, Gabriel and Shane, we can't sing you praises enough. (Both Rae and I will try to get pictures on here soon and I think Gabriel will put some of the movie clips up on his website - www.acimoproductions.com!)

Introduction:  Gabriel and Shane talked about Guerilla Filmaking, a filmmaker who may be short on money but not on passion and vision.
Activity:  Students were put into groups to plan scenes for their movie.

Conclusion:  Students had an opportunity to view their work and make positive comments on each others films.

Kerrobert - Scott Leithead & Linus Shaumbwa

"African Songs and Dance"

Grade 4, 5, 6 Students/ Senior Choir students joined us in the afternoon.

Scott was an enthusiastic presenter!  His energy and love of music was evident and contagious.  The students and teachers enjoyed learning  three African songs and actions to accompany those songs.  The students learned the songs in two parts and Scott was also able to take a few minutes and teach the senior choir and the teachers the songs in four parts.  It was an incredible experience to be able to hear each other singing songs in different languages.  The entire school was treated to a short performance by the "choir" at the end of the day.  The performance was well received!  It was terrific to see all the students in the choir and the teachers share what they had learned throughout the day.  Scott's assistant, Linus, treated us to some drumming at the assembly in addition to particpating in the workshop during the day.  Amazing!

Cutknife Elementary - Holly Hildebrand

"Creating Hand Made Paper" grade 2

"Altering Books" grade 4

This student decided to use a heart shape to cut a frame into her book.

The teacher asked older students to come and document the day with Holly. This young man is video taping the students working and even did some interviews.

Grade four students are very busy with their altered books. Scissors and glue are flying as they try out many ideas.

What a great day had by all!
