Grade Three Workshop

 

Jim Shevchuk (all four strands)

 

Motivational Set:

 

Play music from around the time the students were born, up beat, peppy

a) Chica Cherry Cola - be-bop sound 10 years ago

b) Surf board/Skate board culture. Cut out of a piece of foam a shape of a board and play Surfin’USA or the theme from Hawaii 5-0

c) Lead group activities to move the students around on the “surf board” - a theme from the course “MAKE BELIEVE”.

 

Goals

- To help teachers feel more familiar with the curriculum documents

- Take some ideas home that may be useful in the classroom

Concentrate on the ideas that “Making sense of art should be easy - it is all around us” : architecture, sports, music, work, decorating and Radio etc.”

 

3. Time Allotment and Special Events

O/H - Christmas concerts, drama productions and assemblies are not the sole property of one department or subject area

 

4. Sample Topics Across Areas of Study - O/H

Build on the idea the subject content you are most familiar with. It can be a building block for Arts Ed. awareness help it make sense to the students - ”Make it make sense”.

 

Grade 3 Drama

Sample Unit: Dreams and Fantasy

- Build on the concept of Patterns -

a) Muppet movie - “STOMP”

b) Charlotte Diamond - Dicki, Dicki Dinosaur

c) Sagwa the Chinese Cat - Animated Children’s TV Show

d) Cinder-Elmo - use the concept of “Royalty” with Castles/Knights - Fables and Reader’s Theatre

Grade 3 Visual Art

Sample Unit: Pottery

Discussion -- Pottery - what is in your communities?

 

Suggestions: Resources such as glaze and kilns may not be available

 

Consider referring to churches in your areas a) Stain Glass or b) Icon Walls

 

Become aware of this unit

 

5. Discussion and Question period
