Purpose:
The objective of this workshop is to help teachers become more familiar and comfortable with the Grade 5 Arts Education curriculum. Hands-on activities will incorporate the
Art
Dance
Drama
Music
Creative/Productive
Cultural/Historical
Critical Responsive
Resources:
"Saskatchewan ... A Visual History" a visual arts kit from the Living Sky Resource library and from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

Outline of Activities:
10:45 - 11:30
1. Curriculum Awareness
(use coloured flags to identify pages)
- page 59/handout/1 page overview: Foundational objectives and Sample Units in the curriculum
“What do we want them to learn?”
(overhead of Common Objectives) (coloured tags for objectives)
“How will we know they’ve learned it?”
(tag Evaluation and Rubrics in curriculum)
“What will I need to do to accomplish this?”
- Label the Dance strand together - give them time to tag the other strands.
- Use graphic organizer to look at units and map ideas
11:30 - 12:00
2. Introduce the Hands-on activities (utilize 3 components where possible), look at five art images, and explain workshop plan.
3. Use Lorne Beug's "Untitled" image to work through the activities as a group.
- Looking at Art - questioning (crital responsive)& Visual Symbols, positive/negative - visual art (creative/productive)
- Symmetry/Mirroring - dance (creative/productive)
- Unspoken Thoughts - drama (creative/productive)
- Sample unit in Music: Canadian Brass, Listen to McFerrin version of "Flight of the Bumble Bees" while visualizing bees (critical responsive) Other ideas from the group?
- Information about the artist (typed biography) (cultural/historical)
Lunch 12:00 - 1:00

4. Looking at the Sample Units (a few extra print copies will be available)
- Break into 4 groups.
- Allow time for teachers to read & discuss Sample Units.
- A Graphic Organizer will be provided to assist with analysis, idea web, and discussion.
- Groups are to read over the Sample Unit, simplify the ideas onto the graphic organizer and choose one activity to share/present back to the whole group.
- Groups report back their summary and share an activity.

5. Small Group Hands On Activity
- Hand out an image from the kit, "Saskatchewan ... A Visual History", to each group with the activity guide for each, prepared as follows:
"Len Wuttunee Looking for Lost Horses", Allen Sapp (visual art: perspective, storytelling with images)
"OttoScheidel, Bruno, SK", Don Hall (drama: role play, contextual strategies)
"Estevan, 200,000,000 BC", Jerry Didur (dance: notations, movement for opposites & rhythm)
"Ah...Saskatoon Summer", Jane Zednik (music: soundscapes with found objects)
- groups discuss ideas for the image, they might use the activity guide as inspiration or they may come up with other ideas for the image.
- plan a way to share ideas with the group: perform, tell, illustrate, map
1:50 - 2:30
6. Sharing Ideas, Brainstorming, Best Practice
- groups take turns presenting their image and ideas (in whatever form they choose)
- take some time to discuss each, questions, other ideas that arise
Coffee available throughout the afternoon, no formal break

7. Evaluation: objectives and checklists (samples in the document page 87)
8. Resources available (in my school/community/division/province and on-line)
